Indewhat Day?
I have almost forgotten
“Independence Day”
The lighting of the flame
martial music
mass displays
women with be-faced hips and buttocks
fists raised in the air,
once triumphant turn to anger
Thomas Mapfumo yodelling
“Chitima cherusununguko” (Here comes freedom train)
These are fading scenes in my mind
which is fresh with questions
Independence?
From whom…one oppresser to another?
the then - British colonizer to now Chinese?
Liberation?
To what end...an endless cycle of poverty
and self-exiled ambitions?
Happy Independence Day then,

Little did we know in 1980 that 33 years later we would be dying to be liberated from the same liberation hero.
